It seems that IHG is now following what Hyatt started to quietly do last week for loyalty programs members who had expiring certificates.
IHG is crediting 25,000 points for free night awards that are capped at 40,000 points and expire on December 31, 2021. But only if you contact IHG Rewards customer service.

The phone number for IHG Rewards customer care is 1-888-211-9874. This issue is likely better solved over the phone than by email, and there are only two days of 2021 left.
Conclusion
It would have been better if IHG and Hyatt, among others, had extended these certificates for the last time.
The covid is getting out of control again in some markets, and “forcing” people to burn their certs is not the right thing to do. I am glad that they are crediting some points for members who contact the customer service.
These free night certificates are usually issued for co-branded credit cardholders.
