The Marvel Cinematic Universe will grow bigger than ever in 2022, after staging a comeback for the ages in 2021. While it was never really far from fans’ minds, the shared universe of superheroes had yet to release any new installments since 2019, after a series of pandemic-related delays prevented their planned movie and TV releases from hitting screens.
Marvel Studios ensured that 2021 was a new beginning for the MCU by launching Phase Four with WandaVision, the first of its Disney+ superhero TV series. The show, starring Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany, was a critical and commercial success that set a high bar for the series that followed. But that didn’t stop Marvel from churning out more high quality shows, including The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Loki, What If…?, and Hawkeye.
On the cinematic side, we got the long-awaited Black Widow (which simultaneously streamed on Disney+), Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Eternals, and Spider-Man: No Way Home. We also got Sony’s Venom: Let There Be Carnage.
While 2021 proved to be a very exciting year for Marvel fans, the next 12 months could be even bigger. Here is every Marvel release planned for 2022—and when you can expect to see it.
1. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness // May 6, 2022
The long-awaited sequel to Doctor Strange will see Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sorcerer Supreme still picking up the pieces from his multiverse-bending shenanigans in Spider-Man: No Way Home. He’ll also go up against the terrifying Shuma-Gorath, team up with Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch, and face off against the potentially evil Doctor Strange Supreme.
2. Thor: Love and Thunder // July 8, 2022
Undoubtedly one of the most star-studded non-Avenger movies in the MCU, Thor: Love and Thunder will see Chris Hemsworth’s God of Thunder return for a fourth solo outing. However, he won’t be the only one wielding one of Asgard’s mystical weapons, as former love Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) will return to screens for the first time since 2013’s Thor: The Dark World and is set to follow in her comic book counterpart’s footsteps by wielding Mjolnir and becoming the Mighty Thor.
3. Ms. Marvel // Summer 2022
The MCU’s newest superhero will take flight when Ms. Marvel hits Disney+ in the summer. The six-part series stars Iman Vellani in the title role, as superfan Kamala Khan evolves into a hero of her own. It will also serve as a launching pad for the character before she co-stars in 2023’s much-anticipated The Marvels alongside Brie Larson and Teyonah Parris.
Ms. Marvel was initially supposed to be the last of Marvel Studios’ Disney+ shows to grace our screens in 2021, but it was taken off the calendar when Hawkeye replaced it. It was never made explicitly clear why Marvel chose to change the lineup, but the likely explanation was Hawkeye’s Christmas themes. Nevertheless, it was subsequently confirmed that the show will now stream in summer 2022 instead.
4. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever // November 11, 2022
This sequel to 2018’s Black Panther, one of the MCU’s most acclaimed movies, will pay tribute to the late Chadwick Boseman through a love letter to his beloved character T’Challa. Very little is known about the movie right now, but it is expected that Letitia Wright’s Shuri will be the character who carries on the legacy of her brother.
5. She-Hulk // 2022
She-Hulk tells the story of lawyer Jennifer Walters, who ultimately requires a life-saving blood transfusion from her cousin Bruce Banner. Yes, that Bruce Banner. As a result of said blood transfusion, Jennifer is transformed into the Jade Giantess and finds another way of upholding the law as the She-Hulk. The show boasts an impressive cast, with Mark Ruffalo reprising his role as the Incredible Hulk and Tim Roth returning (his second return after his cameo in Shang-Chi) as Abomination.
6. Moon Knight // 2022
Undoubtedly the most mysterious of Marvel’s upcoming projects is Moon Knight, a six-part drama starring Oscar Isaac that has so far only publicly confirned three actors. Focusing on Marc Spector (Isaac), who, in the comics, is killed and revived by Egyptian Moon God Khonsu—who offers him the chance to redeem his actions as a mercenary by becoming the crimefighter known as Moon Knight—it is rumored to be the MCU’s darkest installment yet.
7. I Am Groot // 2022
Little is known about this animated Guardians of the Galaxy offshoot, but it’s clear that it will follow one of the MCU’s most beloved characters. Focusing on Baby Groot as he grows up in the galaxy, each of the animated I Am Groot shorts will see the title character embark on adventures with some unique and memorable characters.
8. The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special // December 2022
Another mystery revolving around Guardians of the Galaxy is the plot to their upcoming holiday special. But we know that the space-traversing team of misfits loves a bit of chaos—so you can bet that’s exactly what we’re going to get from this one. The live-action special will share continuity with both Guardians films (and, by extension, the whole MCU) and will be filmed during production of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. In another first for the MCU, this will also be the universe’s first (though probably not their last) holiday special.
